[teɣuθi'ɣalpa], Hauptstadt von Honduras, in einem Hochbecken, 900-1 000 m über dem Meeresspiegel, (1995) 813 900 Einwohner; Verwaltungssitz eines Departaments; Erzbischofssitz; staatliche und private Universität, Landwirtschaftsschule, Konservatorium, wissenschaftliche Akademie und Institute, Nationalarchiv, -bibliothek, -museum; Textil- und Bekleidungs-, Zucker-, Zigaretten-, chemische, Maschinen- u. a. Industrie; internationaler Flughafen, jedoch ohne Bahnanschluss.
 
 
Kathedrale (1758-82), Kirche Los Dolores (1736-1815), Hotel »McArthur« (19. Jahrhundert) sowie moderne Bauten des 20. Jahrhunderts (Gebäude der Nationalversammlung u. a.).
 
 
Tegucigalpa wurde 1578 als Bergbausiedlung in der Nähe heute erschöpfter Gold- und Silberminen gegründet; seit 1880 ist es endgültig (1824-80 alternierend mit Comayagua) Hauptstadt von Honduras. Die heutige Stadt ist aus zwei durch den Río Choluteca getrennten Teilen zusammengewachsen, das eigentliche Tegucigalpa und das in der Ebene liegende, bis 1938 selbstständige Comayagüẹla, dessen Kern eine Indianersiedlung ist.
